THERE is one thing that changes when we become adults. We no longer fall in love with clothing simply because the style is beautiful. We begin to look for pieces that have a story, a soul and a reason to be kept.
That is why there are clothes we wear once, and then they disappear somewhere. But there are also pieces we keep for years because every time we wear them, there is a feeling that cannot be explained.
Truly great fashion is not just about making people turn their heads. It makes us feel something. That is what I felt when looking at the Corrupted Beauty collection by young designer Sara Alysha, a graduate of Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Shah Alam.
Perhaps her name is still new in the industry, but her courage is enough to catch attention. When many designers choose to produce easily acceptable outfits, Sara Alysha chose to build a narrative.
Pearls were made a symbol of elegance and softness, while the interplay of moss green, ocean blue and textured bronze hues tell a story about the side that is not visible at first glance. From the combination of two opposing worlds, a couture collection was born that feels artistic, fresh and full of emotion.
However, what captivated my attention most was not the meticulously embroidered pearls or the dramatic headpieces. Rather, it was the way she played with silhouettes.
Shell shapes were translated into more structured shoulders, panels that create dimension on the body, and sculptural skirts that appear to protect a pearl within.
It reminds us that fashion does not necessarily have to follow the body shape. Sometimes, it is the clothing that gives shape to confidence that most brings out one’s personality.
This trend is actually becoming increasingly evident in today’s fashion world. Malaysian women are increasingly bold in experimenting with pieces that have character. No longer just looking for “safe” clothing, but pieces that can leave an impression even without heavy patterns or overly bright colours. Elegance today is not about excess.
Elegance is when people still remember our appearance even after the event ends.
If there is one tip that can be borrowed from this collection, let the silhouette be the main character. If the outfit already has a dramatic cut, keep accessories minimal and choose shoes with a clean design.
Conversely, if the outfit is more minimalist, add textured elements such as modern pearl earrings, bags with unique finishes or fabrics with interesting surfaces. In fashion, not everything needs to stand out at the same time.
Often, one precise detail is more powerful than ten accessories competing for attention. I was also drawn to the way Sara Alysha used pearls. They were not merely a classic decoration often associated with traditional imagery, but arranged organically so that they feel alive and modern.
That is where a designer’s strength lies. She does not just create clothes that are beautiful to the eye, but creates an experience for those who wear them.
Finding a place in the fashion industry is not easy, let alone for a young designer who has just completed her studies.
However, every piece in this collection proves that Sara Alysha is not trying to be someone else’s shadow. She chose to build her own identity, and that is the most important first step in the fashion world.
I have always believed that one day we may forget the colour of the shoes we wore to an event or the brand of the bag we carried. But we never forget how a piece of clothing made us feel about ourselves.
And if a young graduate is already able to create work that leaves that feeling, a few years from now, we will see her name on the world stage, smiling.
