PUTRAJAYA: The Government has decided that there is no need to implement an increase in the retirement age for the civil service personnel for the time being.

Unity Government Spokesman, Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, said that the matter was decided in today’s Cabinet meeting.

“The Government has decided that there is no need to implement an increase in the retirement age for the time being.

“Therefore, the retirement age for civil servants remains at 60 years,” he said briefly in a statement.

Currently, the mandatory retirement age for civil servants in Malaysia is set at 60 years, which is also the minimum retirement age for the private sector under the Minimum Retirement Age Act 2012.

However, this group may opt for early retirement at the age of 55, 56, or 58 years with the permission of their respective department heads.

Previously, the Public Service Department (JPA) was to conduct a comprehensive study regarding the proposal to raise the mandatory retirement age for civil servants to 65 years.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, during the tabling of the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK-13) in the Dewan Rakyat, also informed that the mandatory retirement age would be reviewed in line with Malaysia’s transition towards becoming an ageing nation.

The matter is contained in the Ninth Initiative of RMK-13, which emphasises social justice and equality of opportunity for all citizens.
