Two Senior Diplomats Appointed as Malaysia’s Permanent Representatives to the UN in New York and Geneva
KUALA LUMPUR: Two senior diplomats, Datuk Nadzirah Osman and Datuk Zanariah Zainal Abidin, have been appointed as Malaysia’s Permanent Representatives to the United Nations (UN) in New York, United States, and Geneva, Switzerland, respectively.
The presentation of the instruments of appointment was officiated by Foreign Minister, Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, at a ceremony at Wisma Putra, yesterday.
Mohamad said Nadzirah and Zanariah are senior diplomats with extensive experience in various fields of diplomacy and have held various important positions at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Malaysian missions abroad.
“This appointment reflects the government’s confidence in their capabilities and leadership in strengthening Malaysia’s role on the international stage,” he said in a Facebook post.
Nadzirah holds a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree from the University of Malaya and joined the public service as an Administrative and Diplomatic Officer in 1994.
Previously, she was Malaysia’s Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva, Switzerland since 2023 and had been appointed as Malaysia’s Ambassador to the Czech Republic and the Netherlands.
She, who had served at Malaysian diplomatic missions in Mexico City, Mexico and London, the United Kingdom, also held the posts of Deputy Secretary-General of Multilateral Affairs, Secretary of the Multilateral Political Division, Secretary of the Human Resource Management Division and Secretary of the Multilateral Economic and Environmental Division, in addition to serving at the Eastern Europe Division and the Americas Division.
Meanwhile, Zanariah holds a Master of Public Policy from the Graduate School of International Politics, Japan, and a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree from Aberystwyth University, Wales, the United Kingdom.
In 1995, she joined the public service as an Administrative and Diplomatic Officer and had held the post of Director-General of the ASEAN-Malaysia National Secretariat at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs since 2021.
Previously, she was Malaysia’s Ambassador to the Czech Republic and Deputy Permanent Representative of Malaysia to ASEAN in Jakarta, the Republic of Indonesia, in addition to serving at Malaysian diplomatic missions in Caracas, the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and Santiago, the Republic of Chile.
She also held the posts of Secretary of the Multilateral Political Division, Secretary of the Multilateral Security Division and Director at the ASEAN-Malaysia National Secretariat while at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in addition to serving at the Regional and Maritime Affairs Division, and the Economic Division.
