ASHGABAT (TURKMENISTAN) – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov today witnessed the signing of a strategic collaboration between PETRONAS and the Turkmenistan authorities, marking a new chapter in the economic and energy relations between the two countries.

According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), this achievement comes in conjunction with 30 years of Malaysia’s cooperation with Turkmenistan in the energy sector, which has become one of the key pillars of the bilateral relations between both nations.

“This relationship not only strengthens the friendship between Malaysia and Turkmenistan but also contributes to economic growth, talent development, as well as knowledge and technology transfer that bring mutual benefits.

“This collaboration also opens doors to more strategic involvement in the development of future energy resources, including the exploration of Turkmenistan’s vast potential in the natural gas sector, as the country possesses one of the world’s largest gas reserves,” according to the PMO.

The statement added that this development also reflects international confidence in Malaysia’s capabilities in the energy sector and strategic industries.

The PMO explained that this further proves that the expertise, talent and technology developed by the country are able to compete and contribute to economic development and energy security on a global scale.

“The MADANI Government welcomes this development, which not only strengthens Malaysia’s bilateral relations with Turkmenistan but also opens up opportunities for broader economic cooperation and investment in the future,” it said.

Anwar is currently on a two-day official visit that began on Thursday, and was received by Berdimuhamedov in an Official Welcome Ceremony at the Presidential Palace, before leading the Malaysian delegation to the bilateral meeting between Malaysia and Turkmenistan.

In 2025, Turkmenistan was Malaysia’s fourth-largest trading partner among Central Asian countries.

The total bilateral trade value between Malaysia and Turkmenistan amounted to RM75.80 million, with Malaysian exports valued at RM75.50 million, an increase of 9.0 per cent compared to the previous year’s figure.

Turkmenistan is also a key investment destination for PETRONAS, with the company’s total investments in the country having reached RM52.73 billion from 1996 to the present.
