Loke and Onn Hafiz Put Differences Aside, Reaffirm Commitment to Johor’s Development

KULAI: After weeks of public exchanges over policy and governance issues, Transport Minister Anthony Loke and Johor caretaker Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi appeared together on Tuesday, emphasising professionalism and cooperation in advancing the state’s development agenda.

The two leaders met during the launch of the Southern Shuttle service at the Kulai KTM Station, where they stressed that political differences should not hinder efforts to improve public transportation and address growing traffic challenges ahead of the commencement of the Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link next year.

In his address, Loke said the Transport Ministry would continue working closely with the Johor government regardless of political circumstances, noting that development projects and public services must remain the priority.

“Political matters can be addressed through the appropriate political channels. However, issues involving public services, infrastructure and the responsibilities shared between the federal and state governments must continue uninterrupted,” he said.

Loke also reaffirmed the federal government’s support for Johor’s proposed Elevated Autonomous Rapid Transit (E-ART) system, describing it as a crucial long-term solution to traffic congestion expected following the launch of the RTS Link connecting Johor Bahru and Singapore.

He said discussions on financing mechanisms for the E-ART project were ongoing, adding that Putrajaya remained committed to helping Johor realise the project as quickly as possible.

According to Loke, interim initiatives such as the newly launched Southern Shuttle service and expanded public bus connectivity would help reduce congestion while encouraging more residents to use public transportation.

In a light-hearted remark, the DAP secretary-general joked that many journalists had attended the event anticipating further tensions between the two leaders following their recent public disagreements.

However, he stressed that mature leadership requires the ability to separate politics from governance and continue collaborating for the benefit of the people.

Meanwhile, Onn Hafiz echoed the call for professionalism, saying leaders have a responsibility to serve citizens regardless of political differences.

“Even in extraordinary circumstances, governments must continue to function professionally and focus on delivering the best outcomes for the people,” he said.

The Johor leader noted that despite receiving the invitation on short notice, he adjusted his schedule to attend the event as a sign of his commitment to cooperation and public service.

Onn Hafiz also reminded leaders that voters ultimately judge governments based on tangible results rather than promises or announcements.

“The people are not concerned about who announces the most projects. What matters to them is who delivers meaningful results and improves their daily lives,” he said.

The appearance of both leaders at the event signalled a more conciliatory approach following recent political tensions, with both emphasising that collaboration between the federal and Johor governments remains essential to ensuring the success of major transportation projects and supporting the state’s continued growth.
