Breaking: Building Owner Demolishes Rohingya Settlement in Hulu Langat
HULU LANGAT: A settlement around a flat building allegedly built illegally by the Rohingya ethnic group here is currently in the process of being demolished.
Sungai Makau Village Headman, Karen Chong, 48, said the demolition work began at 11 am yesterday and is expected to take approximately two weeks to complete.
According to her, the cost of the demolition is fully borne by the building owner who came forward to take responsibility following the issue.
A Berita Harian survey yesterday found that the four-storey flat allegedly built illegally by the Rohingya ethnic group in a remote area in Sungai Tekali here, was seen to be quiet and abandoned by its residents.
Most of the premises units in the building are now locked tight, believed to have been vacated by its residents who moved to other areas after the settlement went viral, since three days ago.
The survey also found that several business equipment at food stalls located around the building were seen abandoned in haste, while the electricity supply was found to still be functioning.
A survey around the building also found that the area is not just a settlement, but also serves as a small business area for the community.
The lower part of the building houses a coffee processing area, while at the back there is a workshop, a lorry parking area and a food stall.
Previously, a video went viral showing a very dilapidated four-storey flat, with corridor pathways covered by zinc roofs, and brick wall structures that were not properly cemented.
In addition, the multi-storey residence believed to be occupied by the Rohingya community in Sungai Tekali had water pipe connections and electrical wiring that were tangled and suspicious.
Landowner bears demolition cost, beginning in Sungai Makau
Meanwhile, Harian Metro contacted Dusun Tua State Assemblyman, Datuk Johan Abd Aziz, who explained that the work to demolish the structure of the Rohingya village in Sungai Tekali, Hulu Langat began today, carried out by the landowner.
He said the demolition of the building began with the structure in Kampung Sungai Makau first.
“The demolition work of the structure in that area is being carried out by the landowner himself and is currently in the process of implementation.
“It (is the same) as that four-storey ‘flat’-like building, but he (the landowner) is demolishing the back part first,” he said when contacted by Harian Metro today.
According to him, the demolition work in Kampung Sungai Makau used one excavator.
Johan however was of the view that the use of one excavator was insufficient to demolish the building structure in that area.
Selangor government has not yet approved RM600,000 allocation
He was also informed by the Hulu Langat District Officer that the allocation amount of RM600,000 to demolish the building has still not been approved by the state government.
“We planned to request it from the state government but before the allocation could be submitted, the landowner had already done it himself (the demolition).
“That is what I emphasise, this landowner must be responsible,” he said.
Yesterday, Hulu Langat Member of Parliament, Mohd Sany Hamzan explained that the RM600,000 amount to demolish the four-storey ‘flat’ building illegally built by the Rohingya community in a remote area in Sungai Tekali, Hulu Langat did not come from him.
