Xi Calls for “New Positioning” in US–China Ties After Summit With Trump

BEIJING: Chinese President Xi Jinping has described a “new positioning” in relations with the United States that balances cooperation with controlled competition, following his recent summit with US President Donald Trump.

According to a statement from China’s foreign ministry, Xi Jinping said both leaders had agreed on the importance of building a constructive and strategically stable relationship that could guide bilateral ties over the next three years and beyond.

Xi said the future framework would be primarily based on cooperation while maintaining “measured competition” to ensure what he described as “normal stability in which differences are controllable” and “lasting stability in which peace can be expected”.

The Chinese leader also called for expanded engagement between the two countries across multiple sectors, including trade, health, agriculture, tourism, people-to-people exchanges, and law enforcement cooperation.

Despite emphasising cooperation, Xi also urged the United States to exercise “utmost caution” in handling the Taiwan issue, which remains one of the most sensitive points in US–China relations. Beijing considers Taiwan part of its territory, while Taipei strongly rejects that position.

“If handled poorly, the two countries could collide or even enter into conflict, pushing the entire China–US relationship into an extremely dangerous situation,” Xi warned.

The remarks highlight both the potential for renewed engagement between the world’s two largest economies and the ongoing strategic tensions that continue to define their relationship, particularly over Taiwan and broader geopolitical competition.
