PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia is set to strengthen its engagement with the BRICS bloc as Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan undertakes a working visit to New Delhi, India, from May 14 to 15 to attend the BRICS Ministers of Foreign Affairs meeting.

The meeting serves as one of the main preparatory platforms ahead of the upcoming BRICS Leaders’ Summit scheduled to take place from Sept 12 to 13 this year.

Held under India’s 2026 BRICS Chairmanship theme, “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability (BRICS)”, and guided by the broader concept of “Humanity First”, the gathering is expected to focus on strengthening international cooperation amid ongoing global economic and geopolitical challenges.

Malaysia said the priorities outlined by the chairmanship align closely with the country’s national agenda, particularly in strengthening economic resilience, accelerating digital transformation, expanding technological innovation, and advancing sustainable development initiatives.

During the meeting, Mohamad is expected to deliver Malaysia’s national statement, reaffirming the country’s support for multilateral cooperation, reforms in global governance, and stronger representation for developing nations within the international system.

Malaysia is also expected to present its views on several pressing global issues, including international trade, supply chain resilience, energy security, digitalisation, and climate action.

As part of its long-term strategic engagement with BRICS, Malaysia will continue efforts to deepen cooperation across key sectors while advancing its aspiration to become a full member of the grouping.

On the sidelines of the meeting, the foreign minister is also scheduled to hold bilateral discussions with several counterparts to exchange views on regional and international matters of mutual interest.

The visit reflects Malaysia’s continued commitment to a balanced, pragmatic, and principled foreign policy, while reinforcing its role as an active middle power advocating for a more inclusive, stable, and sustainable global order.
