KUALA LUMPUR, Feb. 4: A former juvenile detainee who spent nearly a quarter of a century behind bars and earned a doctorate while incarcerated has been granted a rare royal audience with the Sultan of Selangor.

Dr. Malik Yatam, 39, met Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah on Tuesday in an emotional meeting that lasted close to an hour, according to a statement shared by the Selangor Royal Office on its official Instagram page.

The meeting is believed to be unprecedented, marking the first known occasion the Selangor ruler has personally received a former prisoner who was earlier granted a full royal pardon.

Those present described the audience as solemn and deeply moving as Dr. Malik recounted his extraordinary life journey from entering prison as a teenager to emerging decades later as a doctorate holder.

Dr. Malik was detained in 2001 at the age of 14 under the “detention at the Sultan’s Pleasure” order after committing an offense as a minor. While the sentence spared him the death penalty due to his age, it came without a fixed release date, leaving his future uncertain for years.

During his 24 years in custody, Dr. Malik devoted himself to education, ultimately earning a PhD in business administration while serving his sentence at Kajang Prison. His achievement is believed to be the first of its kind in Malaysia, making him the only known detainee to obtain a doctorate while imprisoned.

He was released on Dec 11, 2024, after receiving a full pardon in conjunction with the Sultan of Selangor’s birthday celebrations. The decision followed detailed deliberations by the Selangor Pardons Board, which convened on Nov. 24 and considered his rehabilitation, academic accomplishments, and personal transformation.

During the audience, Sultan Sharafuddin inquired about Dr. Malik’s adjustment to life after prison and his aspirations moving forward.

His Royal Highness was reportedly deeply touched by Dr. Malik’s perseverance and resilience, remarking that he truly deserved a second chance. The Sultan also advised him to continue upholding his family’s honor and to build a better future through integrity, hard work, and meaningful contributions to society.
