MELAKA, Jan 28:  A senior army officer stationed at a military camp in Melaka has been remanded for six days as the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) investigates allegations of bribery linked to procurement contracts.

Magistrate Uthman Abd Ghani granted the remand order until Feb 2 after allowing an application by the MACC at the Ayer Keroh Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.

The suspect, believed to be in his 40s and serving as the commanding officer of the camp, was detained at around 12.15pm on Tuesday (Jan 27) when he appeared at the Melaka MACC headquarters in Alai to provide a statement.

Sources familiar with the investigation said preliminary findings suggest the alleged offense occurred about two years ago. The officer is suspected of receiving approximately RM150,000 in cash from five companies as inducements to award contracts for the supply of raw materials used in maintenance works at a military storage facility in the state.

Melaka MACC director Datuk Adi Supian Shafie confirmed the arrest when contacted and said the case is being investigated under Section 16(a)(B) of the MACC Act 2009, which relates to the acceptance of gratification by a public officer.

Investigations are ongoing as MACC seeks to determine the full extent of the alleged misconduct and whether additional parties were involved.
