Turkey Hails Gaza “Board of Peace” as Historic Opportunity for Lasting Regional Peace

ISTANBUL, Jan 23: Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has described the newly formed Gaza “Board of Peace” as a “historic opportunity” to establish lasting peace and address the humanitarian crisis in the region.

Writing on the Turkish social media platform NSosyal, Fidan highlighted that the board, of which President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is a founding member, aims to alleviate the prolonged suffering of Gaza’s population, meet their urgent humanitarian needs, and create a framework for inclusive and enduring peace.

Fidan, who attended the signing ceremony of the Board of Peace Charter in Davos, Switzerland, on behalf of Erdogan, said the board would work closely with the people of Gaza to shape the region’s future, help Gaza recover, and ensure peace takes root.

“We believe that by working shoulder to shoulder with the people of Gaza, the Board of Peace will play a strong role in shaping Gaza’s future, helping the region stand back on its feet, and allowing peace to take root,” Fidan said.

He further reaffirmed Türkiye’s commitment to a future where the voices of Gazans are heard, their rights protected, and they can live in peace.

The board was announced last week by the White House alongside the formation of a National Committee for the Administration of Gaza, one of four bodies intended to manage the enclave’s transitional phase.

The initiative coincides with phase two of a ceasefire agreement, which halted Israel’s war on Gaza that has resulted in over 71,000 deaths and 171,000 injuries since October 2023.

The creation of the board is part of a 20-point peace plan proposed by US President Donald Trump and endorsed by the UN Security Council under Resolution 2803 in November last year.
