Indonesia Calls for Clear UN Mandate in Gaza Peace Efforts

JAKARTA, Nov 4: Indonesia has reaffirmed that any initiative to achieve lasting peace in Gaza must be grounded in a strong international mandate to ensure legitimacy and effective implementation.

Foreign Minister Sugiono made the call during a ministerial meeting on Palestine held in Istanbul on Monday, emphasizing that the path toward peace must be guided by clear authority and global consensus.

“Indonesia is ready to play its part, including by deploying United Nations (UN)-mandated forces to monitor the situation, protect civilians, and assist in Gaza’s reconstruction,” Sugiono said, following up on discussions and agreements made earlier at Sharm El-Sheikh.

He underlined that while practical steps toward peace are vital, they must be executed under an official UN mandate or another internationally recognized framework. “Clarity of mandate is essential to ensure both legitimacy and effective action,” he added, citing the importance of structured global coordination.

Sugiono also called for stronger coordination among member states of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to ensure that any peace initiative aligns with the two-state solution and safeguards the long-term interests of the Palestinian people.

The Istanbul meeting, chaired by Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, gathered top diplomats from Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Jordan, along with state ministers from Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.

According to Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, discussions focused on the implementation of the Gaza peace plan, strengthening ceasefire mechanisms, and mobilizing international support for Gaza’s reconstruction and humanitarian recovery.

Sugiono reiterated that Indonesia’s position remains firm: any peace process must be comprehensive, legitimate, and internationally backed to bring real security and dignity to the Palestinian people.
