Large Sinkhole Forces Road Closure in Bayan Lepas, Authorities Launch Investigation

GEORGE TOWN, Nov 4: Authorities have cordoned off a section of road in Bayan Lepas after a large sinkhole appeared near a busy school intersection on Tuesday evening. The incident prompted immediate safety measures and a full-scale investigation to determine its cause.

According to Penang Infrastructure and Transport Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari, the sinkhole, measuring approximately 3.5 meters wide, 5 meters long, and 1.9 meters deep, was discovered at the junction of Jalan Datuk Ismail Hashim and Jalan Kenari, directly in front of SMK Sungai Ara.

“The Penang Public Works Department (JKR) reported a new sinkhole incident along Jalan Kenari. Thankfully, no injuries or accidents occurred as a result,” Zairil said in a statement on Tuesday night.

He confirmed that plastic barriers have been installed to cordon off the affected area, while temporary road closures have been implemented. Traffic is being diverted via Jalan Sungai Ara 1, Jalan Persiaran Relau, and Jalan Kedidi to ensure smooth movement and public safety.

The Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) and Indah Water Konsortium (IWK) have been instructed to conduct asset and underground infrastructure inspections in the vicinity to determine if water or sewage leaks may have contributed to the ground collapse.

Zairil added that the actual cause of the sinkhole would require a detailed technical study before any repair work could begin. “The department is committed to ensuring the safety of all road users and will provide updates once further findings are available,” he said, while thanking the public for their patience and cooperation.

A video of the incident, which has gone viral on social media, shows motorists cautiously navigating around the gaping hole along the busy road, especially during school dismissal hours.

As of now, Jalan Kenari remains closed until further notice, pending the completion of investigations and repair work.
