Kuala Lumpur: The International Labour Organization (ILO) has praised Malaysia and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for their strong leadership in steering the ASEAN Malaysia Chairmanship 2025, recognizing the country’s efforts in advancing regional cooperation and progressive labor policies.
During a courtesy call on Prime Minister Anwar at the Prime Minister’s Office in Putrajaya, ILO Director-General Gilbert F. Houngbo lauded Malaysia’s successful efforts in hosting and bringing together global and regional leaders for the 47th ASEAN Summit.
This visit marks the first by an ILO Director-General since Malaysia joined the international labor body in 1957, underscoring the significance of Malaysia’s growing role in regional labor and employment issues.
Houngbo, who was accompanied by Human Resources Minister Steven Sim, also discussed the future of regional employment, emphasizing Malaysia’s leadership in promoting fair labor practices and sustainable job creation across ASEAN.
He reaffirmed the ILO’s commitment to supporting ASEAN’s labor agenda, pledging closer cooperation with member states to strengthen regional labor standards and social protections.
During the meeting, Minister Sim proposed establishing the ILO’s new regional office for Asia and the Pacific in Malaysia, citing the nation’s active role and dedication to advancing the labor agenda both regionally and globally.
The ILO also recognized Malaysia as a model of progressive labor leadership, noting several key initiatives, including the ratification of ILO Convention 155 to enhance occupational safety and health, the drafting of the Gig Workers Bill, and ongoing reforms in the foreign worker management system.
Malaysia is further prioritizing the development of the national skills training sector, aimed at preparing a future-ready workforce in line with ASEAN’s inclusive and sustainable growth vision.
