Siti Nurul Masyitah may miss the World Championships

ISKANDAR PUTERI: After suffering a serious mishap over the weekend, national kayak athlete Siti Nurul Masyitah Elias had two six-hour surgeries yesterday, one on her right shoulder and the other on her pelvic bone.

The student of mechanical engineering at Ibrahim Sultan Polytechnic (PIS) was hurt when her motorbike was rear-ended by a suspected intoxicated driver on the Eastern Dispersal Link (EDL) Highway. On Saturday, the event happened at KM3.5.

Masyitah, also lovingly called Uda, is presently recovering at Columbia Asia Hospital.

Masyitah was initially brought to Sultanah Aminah Hospital unconscious, but she eventually came to, according to her mother, Saloma Ramli, 58.

She can now recall the incident and describe what occurred.

“It shattered me when she described feeling as if her skin were on fire while being dragged approximately 100 metres by the car that collided with the rear of her motorbike,” she stated.

At approximately 4.30 p.m., Masyitah was travelling from Pontian to the kayak training facility in Bakar Batu when the incident occurred.

Saloma stated that her daughter may need more surgery on her hip, waist, and shoulder.

Masyitah also requires cosmetic surgery among other corrective procedures, but the date of the procedure is not yet set.

Because skin grafting is not an option for Masyitah’s injuries from the accident, she needs plastic surgery.

The fifth of eight siblings, Saloma praised her daughter for her bravery and resiliency, noting that she frequently returned to Parit Rambai, Pontian, to take care of her family’s needs.

“I broke my back in an accident in mid-April,” she stated.

While visiting Masyitah in the hospital today, Mohd Hairi Mad Shah, the head of the State Youth, Sports, Entrepreneurship, and Cooperative Development Committee, announced that the state sports council would investigate ways to assist the athlete with her medical expenditures.
