9,515 Rohingya Refugees Across Hulu Langat

SHAH ALAM: A total of 9,515 Rohingya ethnic refugees were detected in the distribution of their settlements across the whole of Hulu Langat, involving areas such as Beranang, Kajang, Ampang and Cheras.

In fact, the distribution of their settlements is also seen to have increased from rural areas to urban areas based on information updates up to last July.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said that in rural areas such as in Beranang, the settlements housing this ethnic group are between 20 to 30 people and the number is not very large.

“When entering the municipal areas such as Kajang, the number increases to hundreds of people, such as in Kampung Sungai Sikamat where there are 400 people, but in certain areas such as Taman Kantan Permai, it is only around 50 people.

“That number increases further when looking at other urban areas such as in Cheras, where the presence in a certain area is between 200 to 300. In Ampang, that number multiplies to reach thousands of people, such as in Tasik Tambahan, nearly 2,000 people.

“In Pandan Mewah, nearly 1,500 people, and places such as Bandar Baru Ampang, Kosas and so on are around 300 people,” he said during the question and answer session at the Second Meeting of the Fourth Term of the 15th Selangor State Legislative Assembly (DUN) here today.

He was responding to a question from the Dusun Tua State Assemblyman (ADUN), Datuk Johan Abd. Aziz regarding the issue of illegal immigrants and that ethnic group in the district.

In June last, Utusan Malaysia reported that part of the building structures that served as settlements for the Rohingya community in Kampung Baru Sungai Makau were demolished, and the process was expected to take two weeks to complete.

Amirudin informed that currently the state government is implementing integrated actions with enforcement agencies, especially from the Federal Government, when it involves complex resolutions with the enforcement of various laws.

“The state government is aware that the issue of illegal immigrants (PATI), including the refugee community, is a complex issue involving various jurisdictions. Therefore, close cooperation between the state, federal agencies, local authorities (PBT) and enforcement agencies at the district level must continue to be strengthened.

“The state government will continue to ensure that the approach implemented takes into account enforcement, security, public order aspects, and the settlement of PATI in Hulu Langat will be addressed in an orderly and effective manner,” he explained.
