SUKMA 2026 Opens Economic Opportunities for Tanjung Sepat Residents
KUALA LANGAT: The excitement of the 2026 Malaysia Games (SUKMA) is beginning to be felt by the residents of Tanjung Sepat, as the hosting of the games is expected to bring economic spillover through increased demand for accommodation, food businesses and local products.
Housing and Culture EXCO, Datuk Borhan Aman Shah said that most homestays and hotels around the area have been booked in advance by contingents and visitors who will be attending to witness the sporting games.
According to him, this situation shows that hosting SUKMA not only benefits sports development, but also opens economic opportunities for the local community.
“Homestays and village stays in this area have been fully booked since one to two months ago. This proves that SUKMA not only benefits the sports sector, but also stimulates local economic activities,” he told the media after the SUKMA 2026 Torch Run and Merdeka Run programme at Pantai Batu Laut here today.
He said the presence of athletes, family members and supporters is expected to increase demand for various services including accommodation, food as well as products from local entrepreneurs throughout the games.
“Athletes do not come alone, they come with parents, family members and supporters. That is why we are giving space to small entrepreneurs and small and medium industries (SMIs) to market their products throughout the games,” he said.
Borhan, who is also the Tanjung Sepat State Assemblyman (ADN), said the hosting of SUKMA 2026 also adds value to Pantai Batu Laut through upgrade works on facilities and infrastructure as a venue for the sailing competition.
He said the improvements are not only to ensure the smooth running of the games, but can also provide long‑term benefits to the tourism and economic sectors of Kuala Langat.
As the adoptive father of the Selangor sailing team, he said his side will provide full support to ensure the state contingent achieves the best performance, apart from helping to ensure the success of hosting SUKMA 2026.
“Previously, we have also been hosts. This time, when Selangor returns as host after a long time, certainly the development and infrastructure in this area will also be upgraded,” he added.
The 22nd edition of SUKMA will contest 469 events involving 37 types of sports at 52 venues located in nine districts in Selangor.
Meanwhile, Para SUKMA will contest 369 events in 10 types of sports, namely swimming, athletics, badminton, table tennis, tenpin bowling, lawn bowls, archery, chess, boccia and powerlifting.
