1,250 Dilapidated School Redevelopment Projects Approved, Costing RM13.8 Billion

PUTRAJAYA: The government has approved a total of 1,250 redevelopment projects for dilapidated school buildings nationwide, with an overall cost of RM13.8 billion.

The Ministry of Education (KPM) said that as of June, a total of 813 projects have been fully completed, 173 projects are under construction, while another 264 projects are at the pre-construction stage.

“KPM consistently takes proactive steps to address the issue of dilapidated schools nationwide.

“A total of 1,250 redevelopment projects for dilapidated school buildings nationwide have been approved, with an overall cost of RM13.8 billion,” it said in a statement today.

According to the statement, the construction period for these projects ranges from six to 36 months, subject to the scope of the project and site preparation requirements.

Therefore, the number of dilapidated schools as reported by the media recently is dynamic and changes from time to time.

“KPM, through the state education departments (JPN), continuously monitors the needs and feasibility of constructing replacement buildings for dilapidated schools.

“KPM continuously strives to ensure access to quality education and a conducive ecosystem in all schools nationwide for the benefit of students, teachers and the entire community,” it said.

Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek, in a written reply in Parliament yesterday, informed that more than 1,000 schools nationwide have been identified as having structurally unsafe buildings and have been classified as dilapidated.

Responding to a question from Datuk Willie Anak Mongin (GPS-Puncak Borneo), she said KPM is committed to providing safe and conducive educational infrastructure for the use of students and the school community nationwide.
