KUALA LUMPUR: The water supply disruption affecting seven areas in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor is expected to be fully restored by Friday.

According to Berita Harian, Chairman of the Selangor Infrastructure Permanent Committee, Izham Hashim, said the water supply disruption caused by odor pollution in Sungai Kundang and Sungai Sembah following a tank leakage at a plastic factory in Kuang, which resulted in the shutdown of four Water Treatment Plants (LRA), is expected to be fully restored by Friday.

He stated that all four LRAs, namely Rantau Panjang, Sungai Selangor Phase 1, 2, and 3 (SSP1, SSP2, and SSP3), have resumed full operations starting from 3 PM earlier.

He added that Rantau Panjang LRA and Sungai Selangor Phase 1, 2, and 3 LRAs resumed operations after recording zero tons three times consecutively.

“Water distribution involving the Rantau Panjang LRA started at 6 PM earlier while the three SSPs will commence at 8 AM tomorrow.

“Residential areas experiencing low water pressure may take some time, but the majority of users will receive water supply within 24 hours.

“As usual, the distribution process will be carried out in stages according to areas and is expected to be fully completed by Friday,” he said during a special media briefing at the Selangor Economic Action Council (MTES) Operations Room.

Further commenting, he stated that strict actions will be taken against the plastic processing and solid waste factory identified as the cause of odor pollution leading to unscheduled water supply disruptions.

“This follows a tank leakage incident at the premises that caused the scheduled pollutant Poly Methacrylic Acid (PMAA) to flow into three rivers.

“The Selayang Municipal Council (MPS), Selangor Water Management Authority (LUAS), and Selangor Department of Environment (JAS) have also taken action including issuing compounds to the factory owner.

“At the same time,” he said, “JAS and LUAS will continue monitoring the affected locations tomorrow to ensure no recurrence of pollution.”

Earlier, Chairperson of the Permanent Environment Committee, Jamaliah Jamaluddin, confirmed the incident of odor pollution resembling acid in the air and foamy discharge in Sungai Kuang detected on Jalan Kampung Orang Asli, Kuang around 3:30 PM yesterday.

Scheduled pollutant pollution, PMAA, due to a tank leakage at a plastic factory in Kuang was identified as the cause of the shutdown of four Water Treatment Plants (LRA).

In a statement, Air Selangor Management Sdn. Bhd. (Air Selangor) stated that as a result of the incident, over 1,000 areas in Petaling, Klang, Shah Alam, Gombak, Kuala Lumpur, Hulu Selangor, and Kuala Selangor were affected by the temporary shutdown of four LRAs following the incident.
