US State Officially Recognises Aidilfitri, Aidiladha as Public Holidays

HAMILTON: The US state of California has officially recognised Aidilfitri and Aidiladha as public holidays under a new law signed by Governor Gavin Newsom, Anadolu Agency reported.

Assembly Bill 2017, which became law on Sunday, adds the two major Muslim celebrations to the state’s official public holiday calendar.

Under the law, public schools and community colleges are permitted to close for both celebrations through existing local procedures, while eligible public employees may also receive leave benefits.

“The recognition of Aidilfitri and Aidiladha as state holidays is a civil calendar designation acknowledging the cultural significance of these celebrations to communities in California,” according to the law.
