The Late Nabil Brings New Hope to Other Patients

SABAK BERNAM: “If those organs help someone continue living and worshipping, the rewards of that good deed will continue to flow to the late Nabil.”

That was among the main considerations for Mohd Zairee Mindar, 49, and his wife, Zaidah Mohd Sapawi, 49, when they decided to allow the organs of their beloved son, the late Nabil Izz Qaisar, 19, to be donated after he was confirmed brain dead.

Mohd Zairee said the decision was not made hastily, but only after undergoing a counselling session with specialists at Hospital Selayang, who explained the importance of organ donation for patients who had been waiting for a long time.

“At first, organ donation never crossed our minds because all we could think about was Nabil’s condition.

“But after the doctors explained the need for it, we looked at it from the perspective of its benefits and as an act of amal jariah (continuous charity), as well as an opportunity to help those in need,” he told Sinar Ahad.

The late Nabil, a Diploma in Islamic Finance student at the Department of Commerce, Sultan Idris Shah Polytechnic (PSIS), passed away after suffering severe head injuries while on a recreational outing at Taman Eko Rimba Kanching, Rawang, on July 25.

Earlier, Hospital Selayang held an Honor Walk as a final tribute to the late Nabil, who continued to bring hope to others through organ donation.

In a solemn atmosphere at 3am, family members, relatives, friends and their families, teachers, the President of the Parent-Teacher Association of Sekolah Menengah Sains Teluk Intan, PSIS lecturers and hospital staff accompanied the late Nabil on his final journey as a symbol of appreciation for his meaningful sacrifice.

The organs donated by the late Nabil were his lungs, heart, liver, both kidneys and both corneas.

His remains were later laid to rest at Raudhatul Jannah Islamic Cemetery, Taman Pertama, here on July 28.

According to Mohd Zairee, the doctors’ explanation that many patients had been waiting for years to receive organ transplants touched the family’s hearts and influenced their decision.

“That made us think that although he is no longer with us, Nabil is still able to bring new hope to other people,” he said.

He added that before making the decision, he also sought the views of Selangor Deputy Mufti Associate Professor Datuk Dr Miszairi Sitiris to ensure the decision was in line with Islamic teachings.

Mohd Zairee also expressed his appreciation for the care and respect shown by the medical team at Hospital Selayang throughout the organ retrieval process.

“The doctors explained every procedure to us, including administering full anaesthesia to Nabil during the surgery and handling his body with the utmost respect,” he added.

Raised with Strong Values

Recalling his son’s character, Mohd Zairee said the late Nabil, the second of five siblings, had always been raised to become the protector of the family and to shoulder the responsibility of being the guardian (wali) for his sisters should anything happen to him.

“We raised him to be mature, responsible and capable of guiding the family because he was our only son.

“He was never rebellious. If we did not allow him to do something, he would accept it and understand. He also helped the family a great deal and took care of his younger siblings,” he said.

According to him, the late Nabil’s loving nature, willingness to give in and helpful attitude have left a profound void in the family.

“He never liked to argue. Instead, he was always willing to give in and lend a helping hand, and that is what makes us miss him so much,” he said.

Mohd Zairee said all of his children had been taught from a young age to observe their prayers and perform them in congregation whenever they were at home.

“Whenever we travelled together as a family during weekends, we would stop at a mosque or surau when it was time for prayers,” he explained.

Mohd Zairee said the last time he met Nabil was during Friday prayers, a day before the incident, when they met at the compound of Masjid Parit Baru.

“I managed to shake his hand and invited him to return to his grandfather’s house in Perak the next day, but he replied that he would let me know later,” he shared.

Meanwhile, Zaidah said all of her daughters had planned to celebrate the late Nabil’s birthday a day before the tragedy.

“We planned to have a family meal that Sunday to celebrate his birthday, but instead we received a phone call informing us that Nabil was being treated in hospital.

“Who would have thought that our plan to celebrate Nabil’s birthday would turn into the most heartbreaking moment, as we ultimately had to bid him farewell forever,” she said.
