PUTRAJAYA: In a significant breakthrough for regional stability, Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to end their recent hostilities through the implementation of a ceasefire, which will take effect from midnight tonight.

Malaysia, as the current Chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), has been entrusted with the critical role of monitoring the enforcement and compliance of this ceasefire. The responsibility will be carried out in collaboration with other ASEAN member states, following a joint request by both nations.

The agreement underscores ASEAN’s long-standing commitment to peace and stability in the region. It reflects the core principles of the ASEAN Charter, which emphasize mutual respect, dialogue, and the rejection of violence in favor of peaceful resolution and humanitarian values.

“This peaceful approach demonstrates ASEAN’s unwavering dedication to preserving unity and maintaining Southeast Asia as one of the most peaceful, stable, and prosperous regions in the world,” a statement read. “Peace remains the foundation for economic growth and the well-being of our peoples.”

Malaysia also expressed its appreciation to both Thailand and Cambodia for prioritizing diplomacy and dialogue over conflict. Additionally, acknowledgement was given to U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping for their constructive support in facilitating this peace initiative.

This development reinforces ASEAN’s leadership role on the international stage as a credible organization rooted in diplomacy, dialogue, and respect for human dignity.
