GOMBAK: A suspended police inspector was arrested early Sunday following an incident that disrupted public order during Thaipusam celebrations at Batu Caves.

Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail confirmed that the officer, widely known as Inspector Sheila, was detained after an altercation with several traders near the Batu Caves temple at around 4.00am on February 1.

The woman, whose full name is Sheila Sharon Steven Kumar, was arrested under Section 186 of the Penal Code for allegedly obstructing a public servant in the discharge of duties. She was subsequently remanded for one day and released on bail later the same day.

According to Mohd Khalid, police intervened after the situation showed signs of escalating, prompting immediate action to safeguard public order amid the large crowd gathered for the annual religious festival.

Earlier, a video of the incident circulated widely on social media, showing the woman being restrained by two police officers while voicing her dissatisfaction over the arrest. Authorities said the footage did not reflect the full context of the incident.

Police also confirmed that the case is being investigated under Section 186 of the Penal Code and Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act.

Meanwhile, Mohd Khalid noted that several other police reports were filed throughout the Thaipusam celebrations. However, all incidents were minor in nature and were swiftly managed without any serious disruptions to the event.

Authorities reiterated their commitment to maintaining safety and order during major public gatherings and urged the public to cooperate with enforcement personnel at all times.
