PETALING JAYA: Shopee has announced an increase in the transaction fee for sellers from 2.0% to 3.5%, effective August 1.

With the addition of an 8% SST (Sales and Service Tax), the final transaction fee rate will rise to 3.78%. This adjustment affects all local Marketplace and Mall sellers, covering the payment gateway fees imposed by service providers for successful transactions.

The revised fee will be automatically deducted from sellers’ payouts upon order completion. This change has sparked significant backlash among Shopee sellers.

Fari, an online clothing seller who has been with Shopee since 2020, expressed concern over the substantial fee increase. “This rise will certainly impact our profits. We might end up losing money on lower-priced items. I may need to adjust prices and reconsider my pricing strategies,” she told LifestyleTech.

Nadia, another seller with five years of experience on the platform, suggested that continuing to sell on Shopee might no longer be viable for her. “The fee hikes this year have been quite alarming. I might switch to direct transactions with customers instead,” Nadia said.

Various Facebook comments from sellers indicate that many may be forced to increase their product prices to manage the higher fees. In addition to the transaction fee, Shopee also imposes commission fees based on product categories and participation in cashback programs, as well as service and shipping fees.
