Ronaldo Fails To Erase Perception That His Glorious Days Are Behind Him

HOUSTON: Portugal striker Cristiano Ronaldo failed to change the perception that he is past his peak after putting on a lacklustre performance in a 1-1 draw against the Democratic Republic of Congo in a Group K World Cup match.

Portugal were held by Congo, who are making their first appearance on the World Cup stage after 52 years.

Ronaldo, 41, who is featuring in his sixth World Cup – a record he shares with Lionel Messi – had two of Portugal’s best chances to secure victory in the second half, but both went wide despite being from close range.

The frustration of Portugal captain Bruno Fernandes was evident after the first opportunity, as he was actually in a better position to score.

Statistics also showed that Ronaldo made only 25 touches of the ball, the lowest among Portugal players who played more than 45 minutes.

Portugal coach Roberto Martinez refused to comment specifically on Ronaldo’s performance after the match, instead stating that the veteran striker did not receive sufficient support from his teammates.

“We need to make use of all the players on the pitch. The main striker (Ronaldo) needs to be close to the six-yard area and we need to deliver the ball to him,” he said.

When asked whether he considered substituting Ronaldo, Martinez stressed that the player’s experience remains highly valuable.

“It makes no sense to take out the top goalscorer in football history when you need a goal.

“In situations like this, Cristiano’s experience inside the penalty box is very important. The way he draws the attention of the opposition defence is also important because it opens up space for other players.

“When you are searching for a goal, you need Cristiano,” he said.

The debate over whether Ronaldo still deserves to start, be used as a substitute, or be rested entirely is nothing new.

Although he still holds the men’s international record with 143 goals in 229 appearances, Portugal now have many talented attacking players capable of taking on the role.
