BERA: Police have denied claims circulating on social media that one of their officers was injured after being stabbed by an Orang Asli individual during a security monitoring operation at the Ramsar Permanent Forest Reserve in Tasik Bera.

Bera district police chief Superintendent Zulkiflee Nazir said the spread of false information, which had been circulating since yesterday, was irresponsible and could cause public anxiety.

The viral posts alleged that a police officer was stabbed while carrying out patrol and security monitoring duties in the area.

“Police categorically deny the allegation, which is an irresponsible claim.

“The spread of such content not only has the potential to cause public anxiety but could also trigger more serious security incidents that may spiral out of control,” he said in a statement today.

Zulkiflee said police reports had been lodged regarding the viral claims, including reports filed in other districts.

The case is being investigated under Section 500 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

If convicted, those involved could face imprisonment of up to two years, a fine, or both.

“Members of the public, particularly social media users, are advised to act more responsibly and refrain from sharing content that could lead to misunderstandings, hatred and negative perceptions towards any individual or community,” he said.
