KUALA LUMPUR: The Media & Strategic Communications Division of the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) has condemned Meta for removing an Instagram post featuring a meeting between Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Doha, Qatar, in May.

According to Berita Harian, the division stated that Meta’s action clearly demonstrates the social media platform owner’s discrimination against the situation in Palestine and the leaders involved.

“In this regard, we demand an explanation regarding this matter and urge Meta to apologize,” the statement read.

Screenshots shared with the statement show that Meta took down the post yesterday.

The post included a statement from Anwar’s official visit to Qatar in May, where the Prime Minister had met with Hamas Political Bureau Chief Ismail Haniyeh, who was reported to have been killed in Iran early Wednesday morning.

The closed-door meeting between the two leaders took place at a hotel, and the purpose was to gain a clear understanding of the conflict in the Middle East, particularly involving Hamas and Israel in Palestine.

Today, media reports confirmed Haniyeh’s death in Tehran, Iran, with Hamas alleging that Israel was responsible.

Malaysia has strongly condemned the killing of Ismail, a former Palestinian Prime Minister, and his personal bodyguard.

In a statement, Wisma Putra expressed condolences and sympathy to the family, leadership, and people of Palestine.

The statement affirmed Malaysia’s unequivocal condemnation of all acts of violence, including targeted killings, and called on all peace-loving countries to also denounce such actions.
