Pezeshkian Urges Iraq to Guard Airspace as Israel Launches Aggression from Iraqi Territory

Tehran:  Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has condemned recent Israeli acts of aggression launched against Iranian territory using Iraqi airspace, calling it a blatant violation of international law and a serious threat to regional stability.

In a phone conversation on Sunday with Iraqi Prime Minister Muhammad Shayya al-Sudani, President Pezeshkian stressed the urgent need for Iraq to strengthen its border and airspace security to prevent any further misuse by foreign aggressors.

“We emphasize that the Iraqi government must exercise greater vigilance and provide more protection of its borders and airspace to prevent any misuse of the Iraqi territory against the Islamic Republic of Iran,” Pezeshkian said.

The Iranian leader asserted that while Iran did not initiate the conflict, it reserves the right to respond firmly to any further provocations.

“We did not begin the war, but we responded decisively, and if the [Israeli] aggression continues, more painful and crushing responses await the aggressors,” he warned.

Pezeshkian also denounced Israel’s long-standing record of attacks across the region—from Palestine and Lebanon to Syria and Iran—calling on the broader Muslim world to take unified and powerful action.

“If this wicked approach is not stopped through the collective and powerful will of the Islamic Ummah, undoubtedly, sooner or later, other countries in the region will also be exposed to the aggression of this regime.”

He emphasized the obligation of Muslim nations to resist Israeli aggression at all levels and on all international platforms.

Iraq Condemns Israeli Actions, Supports Iran’s Right to Defend Itself

In response, Prime Minister al-Sudani reaffirmed Iraq’s support for Iran and condemned Israel’s attack as a violation of regional sovereignty and international law.

“Iran’s retaliatory operation – Operation True Promise III – was not only a legitimate defense of the Islamic Republic’s territorial integrity but a decisive and crushing response to the Israeli regime, whose entity is based on occupation, crime, and the violation of nations’ rights,” said Sudani.

The Iraqi leader revealed that Baghdad has formally submitted a complaint to the UN Security Council over Israel’s use of Iraqi airspace in the strike against Iran. He added that legal, political, and diplomatic efforts are currently underway.

Prime Minister Sudani further pledged to enhance border security and airspace control to prevent any recurrence of such incidents.

“Iraq will carry out extensive measures to prevent the recurrence of such acts of aggression and to control its borders and airspace with more seriousness,” he stated.
