Perak PKR Chairman Sworn In as Senator
KUALA LUMPUR: Perak PKR Chairman Mohamad Hairul Amir Sabri was sworn in as a new Senator representing the state for a three-year term from Sept 10 until Sept 9, 2029.
Mohamad Hairul Amir, 38, took his oath of office before Dewan Negara President Datuk Awang Bemee Awang Ali Basah in a ceremony at the Dewan Negara, Parliament building here on Tuesday.
He is also the Chief Special Officer at the Tambun Member of Parliament’s Office and was appointed to replace Amanah Vice-President Datuk Seri Dr Mujahid Yusof, whose term as Senator ended on May 24.
On Sept 10, the Perak State Legislative Assembly agreed to elect Mohamad Hairul Amir following his nomination by Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad under Article 45(1)(a) of the Federal Constitution, following a vacancy for a Dewan Negara member elected by the Perak state assembly.
Meanwhile, Awang Bemee, in his address announcing the appointment, said Mohamad Hairul Amir’s experience in political leadership, public administration, government relations, community development and corporate governance would add value to debates and proceedings in the Dewan Negara.
“Yang Berhormat’s involvement in statutory bodies, government-linked companies (GLCs), as well as his roles as an Independent Audit Committee Member and a board member of the executive body of a private company, has further broadened his experience in governance, management, accountability and integrity,” he said.
Awang Bemee said the Dewan Negara hoped Mohamad Hairul Amir’s experience would enable him to contribute constructively in carrying out his responsibilities as a Senator alongside members from diverse backgrounds and political affiliations.
“Although we may have differing views, those differences should be expressed with wisdom, civility and mutual respect,” he said.
Awang Bemee also said the Dewan Negara would continue to play an important role in strengthening Malaysia’s parliamentary institution, including through the implementation of the Parliamentary Services Act 2025, which among other things aims to reinforce the principle of separation of powers and the effectiveness of Parliament’s checks and balances.
He said the move was important in strengthening Parliament’s autonomy and position, enabling it to perform its role as an institution within the country’s democratic system effectively, independently and credibly.
“We want the Dewan Negara to be an institution that represents the voices of the people and the states, scrutinises national policies and legislation, while at the same time strengthening the principle of checks and balances within the parliamentary democracy system,” he said.
According to the parliamentary calendar, the Dewan Negara sitting for the Third Meeting of the Fifth Session of the 15th Parliament will take place from Nov 30 to Dec 22.
