26 people, including 14 soldiers, were killed by a bomb at a train station in the southwestern province of Balochistan on Saturday (Nov. 9). The bombing was blamed on Pakistani separatists.

A bomb went off as people were waiting on a platform at Quetta’s main train station. Quetta is the provincial capital.

Wasim Baig, a spokesman for Sandeman Provincial Hospital in Quetta, claimed that 14 army members and 12 civilians had died, adding to an earlier police count of 25.

The statement also mentioned forty-six security force members and fourteen civilian injuries.

An AFP reporter at the scene saw pools of blood and torn bags where a large metal sheet protecting passengers from the weather had blown off.

Although Balochistan suffers regular attacks, the impact of Saturday’s blast was especially significant for the southwest province, which borders Iran and Afghanistan.

Claimed by the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), one of the main separatist factions in the area, the train station explosion struck at about 8.45am (3.45am GMT).

According to his office, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif warned the perpetrators that “they will pay a heavy price.”

The BLA frequently accuses security forces or Punjabi Pakistanis of killings.

Police at Quetta station are investigating the blast’s cause.

We thought explosives were in the luggage when we arrived. We now suspect a suicide bombing. “Journalists were briefed by senior local police official Muhammad Baloch.

Firefighters, rescuers, and passengers searched abandoned bags on the platform under heavily armed security officers.

Militants have targeted energy projects with foreign backing, particularly from China, accusing outsiders of exploiting the resource-rich region and ignoring Pakistan’s poorest.
