According to Kazakhstan’s Emergency Ministry, at least 28 people escaped the crash of an Azerbaijani airliner in the city of Aktau. This means that it’s likely that over 30 people died. We have found four bodies.

The ministry said in a Telegram message on Wednesday that the plane had 67 people on board, including five crew members. The ministry also reported that 28 individuals sustained injuries in the crash and are currently receiving medical attention at the hospital. The Russian news service Interfax said that the ministry said there might be more survivors, and medical workers at the scene said they had found four bodies.

Azerbaijan Airlines said earlier that the Embraer 190 had to make an emergency stop 3 km from the city.

At first, Kazakhstan’s Emergency Ministry said that 25 people had escaped the crash. Later, they changed that number to 27 and then to 28 as the search and rescue operation at the crash site continued, which made the number of people who were thought to have died go down.

Grozny, a city in Russia in the North Caucasus, was the destination of the plane’s planned flight from Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan Airlines says that 37

The people were from Azerbaijan. The report also said that there were 16 Russians, 6 Kazakhs, and 3 Kyrgyzstanis.

A representative for Rosaviatsia, Russia’s civil aviation authority, said that early information showed that the pilot had decided to go to Aktau after a bird hit the plane and caused “an emergency situation on board.”

Online videos from cell phones seemed to show the plane going down quickly before crashing into the ground in a fireball. In other videos, a piece of the plane’s body was seen lying on its back in the grass, torn away from the wings and the rest of the plane. The video matched the type of plane and its license number.

Some videos shared on social media showed people who were still alive pulling other passengers away from the plane’s wreckage.

FlightRadar24.com data showed that the plane made what looked like a figure-eight turn as it got closer to the Aktau airport. In the last few minutes of the flight, its altitude changed a lot before it hit the ground.

FlightRadar24 reported in a separate online post that “strong GPS jamming” had hit the plane, causing it to transmit incorrect ADS-B data. This is the data that flight-tracking websites use to keep track of planes as they fly. In the past, there have been reports that Russia has blocked GPS signals in the wider area.

When asked for a comment early Wednesday morning, Embraer did not reply right away. Azerbaijan Airlines said in a statement that it would keep the public informed. It also changed the logos on its social media pages to solid black.

Another official report from Azerbaijan’s state news agency, Azertac, said that the country’s emergency situations minister, deputy general prosecutor, and vice president of Azerbaijan Airlines had been sent to Aktau to do an “on-site investigation.”
