Nine Malayan Porcupines Worth RM36,000 Seized in Temerloh

KUANTAN: Nine Malayan porcupines (Hystrix brachyura) estimated to be worth RM36,000 were seized from a house in Kampung Paya Siput, near Lanchang, Temerloh, today.

Southeast Brigade General Operations Force (GOF) Commander Senior Assistant Commissioner Ahmad Radzi Hussain said the seizure was made during an Integrated Operation Khazanah (OBK) at 1pm.

A 54-year-old local man was also arrested after he failed to produce documents related to the animals.

“Personnel found the nine porcupines outside the house and also seized five cages worth RM500.

“Preliminary investigations found that the man kept the porcupines as a hobby and also sold their meat,” he said.

The case is being investigated under Section 60(1)(a) of the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010 (Act 716).
