Najib’s Conditional Pardon: Anwar Reaffirms Commitment to Fighting Corruption

BANGI: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the government respects the spirit of the Federal Constitution and the decision of Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim regarding the case involving former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

Anwar said, however, that this did not prevent him from expressing his views and providing advice based on religious principles, the law and the national interest.

He said the government’s position was clear that the country could not tolerate corruption or the misappropriation of national wealth for personal gain.
“What message do we want to convey? This country cannot tolerate corruption and the plundering of public funds,” he said in his speech at the Three Generations Appreciation Dinner: Continuing the Legacy of Struggle here today.

Anwar also referred to several issues involving institutions that had previously drawn public attention, including Lembaga Tabung Haji, the Federal Land Development Authority (FELDA) and 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), stressing that those accused of misappropriating the country’s wealth must be held accountable.

“Tabung Haji, FELDA, 1MDB — those who plunder the nation’s wealth must answer for it. Whatever the decision, we must not stray from our efforts to safeguard the country,” he said.

Najib, 73, has been serving his sentence at Kajang Prison since Aug 23, 2022, after being convicted in the case involving the misappropriation of RM42 million in SRC International Sdn Bhd funds.

On Sept 18, Sultan Ibrahim granted Najib a conditional pardon allowing him to serve the remainder of his prison sentence in the SRC International case under house arrest until Aug 23, 2028, subject to the payment of a RM50 million fine and compliance with stipulated conditions. BERNAMA
Earlier, the event was also attended by the Prime Minister’s wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, and Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Dr Zulkifli Hasan.

The event brought together more than 2,000 members of the Muslim Youth Movement of Malaysia (ABIM), Wadah Pencerdasan Umat Malaysia (WADAH) and the National Union of Malaysian Muslim Students (PKPIM).
