MELAKA: Melaka DAP has confirmed that it intends to contest eight State Legislative Assembly seats in the upcoming Melaka state election.

Melaka DAP chairman Khoo Poay Tiong said the eight include four seats currently held by the party — Bandar Hilir, Kesidang, Kota Laksamana and Ayer Keroh.

The other four seats DAP intends to contest are Duyong, Bemban, Pengkalan Batu and Gadek.

“We have informed Pakatan Harapan (PH) at both the state and central levels of our intention,” he said.

He was speaking to reporters after a dinner held in conjunction with DAP’s 60th anniversary celebration in Cheng here last night.

Also present were DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke Siew Fook, deputy chairman Nga Kor Ming and vice-chairman Teo Nie Ching.

According to Poay Tiong, Melaka DAP plans to field a mix of new and familiar faces in the upcoming state election.

“There will be some new faces and some who will contest again. We will make the announcement later,” he said.

He said the list of proposed candidates had been submitted to DAP’s central leadership before a final decision on the candidates is made.

Poay Tiong also did not rule out the possibility of DAP fielding a Malay candidate in one of the eight seats it intends to contest.

“We have candidates from all backgrounds because we are one Malaysia. Everyone is represented,” he said.

DAP currently has four representatives in the Melaka State Legislative Assembly — Kerk Chee Yee (Ayer Keroh), Allex Seah Shoo Chin (Kesidang), Low Chee Leong (Kota Laksamana) and Leng Chau Yen (Bandar Hilir).
