KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia will contribute another RM100 million in humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced during a solidarity rally at Dataran Merdeka on Sunday night.

This brings the country’s total pledge to RM200 million, after the first RM100 million allocation announced in October 2023.

“Tonight, I announce that Malaysia will donate another RM100 million. I urge Malaysians to appreciate the peace and independence we enjoy and to preserve these values for all,” Anwar said in his special address.

Anwar delivered one of his strongest condemnations yet against the Israeli government, accusing it of deliberately causing famine in Gaza.

“All kinds of help were given, but these Zionists decided to let the aid rot at the borders. What kind of human is this? This is an animal! People are dying and starving while food and medicine remain blocked,” he declared.

He added, “I am 78 years old, and I have never seen such cruelty. Netanyahu and his goons, they are insane and evil.”

The Prime Minister reiterated Malaysia’s steadfast support for the Palestinian struggle, saying Malaysians will never abandon them.

“We salute your spirit of struggle. We will never leave you alone. Malaysians, and many other friends worldwide, are with you,” he said.

Anwar recalled his long-standing solidarity with Palestine, dating back to 1983, when he was invited by the late Yasser Arafat to attend a Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) conference in Algiers.

“Now, in 2025, the struggle remains the same,” he lamented.

Tens of thousands of Malaysians gathered at the rally, many dressed in white and carrying placards with the slogan #GazaBangkit as a symbol of solidarity.

The event also featured prayers for Gaza, attended by Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Dr. Zaliha Mustafa, and Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar.

During the rally, Anwar launched the Sumud Nusantara Convoy, which will involve participants from eight countries, including Malaysia, Indonesia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Thailand.

The convoy will depart in two groups, one on August 31 and another on September 4—heading to Spain and Tunisia before joining the Global Flotilla en route to Gaza. The movement is expected to be the largest flotilla mission ever, involving dozens of ships and participants from more than 50 countries.
