Malaysia urges the world to help UNRWA
The Prime Minister of Malaysia, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, asked everyone to always back the UNRWA, which is the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East.
According to a statement from the Foreign Ministry, Anwar spoke at the Extraordinary Arab and Islamic Summit on Monday in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. He strongly disagreed with Israel’s choice to remove the international body’s legitimacy.
“He (Anwar) reaffirmed Malaysia’s commitment to UNRWA and its indispensable role in delivering critical humanitarian assistance to alleviate the suffering of Palestinian refugees,” the ministry told us.
On Monday, the Extraordinary Arab and Islamic Summit convened in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, to discuss strategies to halt the ongoing killing of Palestinians.
At the summit, Anwar reiterated Malaysia’s commitment to ending Israel’s ongoing aggression, supporting the Palestinian cause, and agreeing with the Extraordinary Arab and Islamic Summit’s decision.
“Malaysia reconfirmed her commitment to the reconstruction of Gaza, highlighting the critical need for an immediate and coordinated international response to achieve this objective that would facilitate the return of the displaced Palestinian people to their homeland,” the statement said.
The ministry also said that Anwar strongly disagreed with Israel’s attacks on the UN Peacekeeping Mission in Lebanon (UNIFIL), which they said were against the UN Charter and international humanitarian law. They advocated for the suspension or expulsion of Israel from the UN.
“To stop Israel’s year-long genocide against the Palestinian people, the prime minister asked the rest of the world to take action, such as putting an immediate arms embargo in place.”
“Decisive actions are paramount in eliminating the Zionist Israeli regime’s blatant and unchecked aggression, which has also threatened the stability of the region following the regime’s flagrant strikes in Lebanon, Iraq, Iran, Yemen, and Syria,” the statement said.
Anwar also met with leaders from Kuwait, Lebanon, the Maldives, and Saudi Arabia outside of the Summit to talk about the situation in Palestine, ways to improve cooperation between the two countries, and Malaysia’s upcoming role as Chairman of Asean in 2025. He also talked about hosting the Asean-GCC Summit and the Asean-GCC + China Summit.
Anwar was accompanied by Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan and senior government officials.
