KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia and Timor-Leste have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations through greater cooperation in trade, investment, education, and regional development.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim hosted Timor-Leste President Dr José Ramos-Horta at a luncheon held in conjunction with his special visit to Malaysia, highlighting the importance of closer ties between the two neighbouring nations.

Anwar said Malaysia welcomed efforts to deepen regional cooperation based on mutual respect, shared responsibility, and a common commitment towards maintaining peace, stability, and prosperity in the region.

“As neighbouring countries and members of the ASEAN family, Malaysia and Timor-Leste share a strong interest in building closer partnerships that benefit both nations,” he said.

During the meeting, both leaders exchanged views on expanding cooperation in key areas, including economic and trade relations, strategic investments, human capital development, education, and technical and vocational training.

They also explored new opportunities that could support sustainable growth and create wider prospects for younger generations in both countries.

Anwar expressed hope that the longstanding friendship between Malaysia and Timor-Leste would continue to grow stronger, contributing not only to the welfare of both peoples but also to the advancement of ASEAN as a whole.

The visit reflects ongoing efforts by both countries to enhance regional connectivity and strengthen partnerships for shared economic and social progress.
