KUALA LUMPUR, July 10 (Voice of Malaysia): Malaysia and Russia have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations through expanded cooperation in education, technology, and regional diplomacy, following a high-level meeting between Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan and his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, on Thursday.
The bilateral talks took place on the sidelines of the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (AMM) and related events in Kuala Lumpur, under Malaysia’s 2025 ASEAN Chairmanship themed “Inclusivity and Sustainability.”
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Foreign Minister Mohamad said Malaysia expressed strong interest in increasing opportunities for Malaysian students to pursue Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programs in Russia.
“I expressed Malaysia’s interest in securing more placements for our students, and Russia has agreed,” he confirmed, noting that education and human capital development remain a top priority under Malaysia’s ASEAN agenda.
The meeting also addressed broader regional issues, including Russia’s potential participation in the Southeast Asia Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone (SEANWFZ) treaty.
“Russia is considering signing the SEANWFZ treaty with ASEAN, and the documentation will be negotiated at the official level,” said Mohamad, in reference to the landmark agreement that seeks to promote peace and nuclear disarmament in the region.
Lavrov is currently attending several key ASEAN events in Kuala Lumpur, including the ASEAN Post-Ministerial Conference with Russia, the 15th East Asia Summit Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, and the 32nd ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF).
According to a statement from the Russian Foreign Ministry, Lavrov and Mohamad also discussed strengthening bilateral ties and exploring ways to elevate the strategic partnership between Russia and ASEAN. The talks gave particular attention to shared regional challenges and the importance of sustained dialogue.
Lavrov briefly spoke to reporters after the meeting, describing it simply as, “It was a nice meeting.”
Russia established official relations with ASEAN in 1991 and became a full dialogue partner in 1996. The partnership was upgraded to Strategic Partnership status in 2018, underscoring Moscow’s growing engagement in Southeast Asia.
With Malaysia currently holding the ASEAN Chairmanship, the ongoing engagements with Russia signal a forward-looking approach toward stronger multilateral ties and enhanced cooperation in areas such as security, education, and regional development.
