JPN Clarifies Photo Requirements for New-Generation MyKad, Black Headscarf Not Mandatory
SHAH ALAM: Applicants for the new-generation MyKad are allowed to have naturally coloured hair and wear dark-coloured headscarves, which do not necessarily have to be black.
National Registration Department (JPN) Identity Card Division Director Muhammad Asyraf Sukardi said hair colours that are not overly striking are still permitted, including for individuals who naturally have certain hair colours.
“Basically, we allow coloured hair, as long as the colour is not too striking.
“For example, if the person is of Eurasian descent, we allow it, there is no issue. But not blonde hair, not totally blonde. The colours should be more natural,” he said in a video shared on JPN’s Facebook page.
He was clarifying the matter following a recent viral issue concerning coloured hair in photographs for the new identity card.
He added that JPN does not require applicants to wear a black headscarf when taking their MyKad photograph.
Instead, applicants are advised to choose a dark-coloured headscarf to ensure it is clearly visible in the photograph, as the background is white.
“We do not say that the headscarf must be black. We say it should be dark-coloured because the background is basically white.
“If someone wears a light-coloured headscarf, we will not be able to see it clearly in the photograph,” he said.
In a related development, he said the new-generation MyKad is equipped with 53 security features, compared with 23 previously.
“Previously, we had 23 security features. Now, we have 53 security features.
“None of these features can be read by any smartphone. They can only be read using devices and applications authorised by JPN,” he said.
According to him, the identity of a MyKad holder can also be verified through facial recognition with the individual’s consent.
He also said the contact-based Touch ’n Go function is no longer available on the new-generation MyKad.
Those who wish to use the service can instead obtain an NFC card provided by Touch ’n Go, he said.
