KANGAR: The Perlis Immigration Department (JIM) detained four undocumented immigrants (PATI) following raids at six locations housing foreign nationals.

Perlis JIM Director, Mohammad A’sim Md Ali said the arrests were made through Ops Bersepadu and Ops Sapu around this district and Arau on 23 and 24 June.

He said the operation, which began at 5 p.m., involved 16 JIM officers in collaboration with seven members of the Perlis National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK).

“As a result of inspections on 42 individuals aged between one and 69 years, involving locals and nationals of Thailand, Myanmar, Nepal and Bangladesh, we detained four foreign men for various offences.

“Of that number, one Myanmar man and two Bangladeshi men were detained for allegedly not possessing valid travel documents or passes under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.

“Another Bangladeshi man was detained for allegedly overstaying beyond the permitted period under Section 15(1)(c) of the same act,” he said in a statement today.

Mohammad A’sim said that during the operation, his officers also detected several foreign nationals who possessed valid documents including Temporary Employment Visit Passes (PLKS), Social Visit Passes (PLS) and holders of United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) registration cards.

“All detained foreign nationals were taken to the Kangar Immigration Depot for documentation, investigation and further action in accordance with the prevailing legal provisions,” he said.

Meanwhile, he expressed appreciation for the role of community leaders, village heads and the local community who have always served as the ‘eyes and ears’ in channelling information to the authorities.

“As such, JIM will continue to strengthen networking and cooperation with community leaders and strategic partners.

“This is to ensure that information can be channelled quickly and accurately in order to safeguard the nation’s security and sovereignty,” he said.
