Israel Bombs IRIB Headquarters in Tehran During Live Broadcast in Escalation of Regional Conflict

  • Tehran : In a dramatic and widely condemned escalation, Israeli forces bombed the central building of the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) in Tehran on Monday, targeting the national broadcaster during a live transmission.

The attack, which involved at least four airstrikes, struck the news department of IRIB, disrupting live programming and injuring several journalists. It marks a significant and controversial development in the ongoing hostilities between Israel and Iran, with experts warning of severe regional repercussions.

At the time of the strike, news anchor Sahar Emami was delivering a live bulletin. As the building trembled under the force of the first blast, Emami defiantly continued her broadcast, proclaiming “Allah o Akbar” (“God is Great”) in a moment that quickly went viral across social media platforms. Smoke and dust soon filled the studio, forcing her to evacuate temporarily. She later returned to the airwaves alongside Hassan Abedini, IRIB’s news director and deputy for political affairs.

“If I die, others will take my place and expose your crimes to the world,” Emami declared, facing the camera with resolute composure in what is already being called a defining moment of journalistic resistance.

The Israeli Ministry of Defense has claimed responsibility for the attack, which it described as part of an ongoing military operation against Iranian state and military infrastructure. However, international reaction has been swift and critical.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry condemned the strike as a “war crime” and urged the United Nations to take immediate action. Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei posted on X (formerly Twitter), saying: “The world is watching: targeting Iran’s news agency IRIB’s office during a live broadcast is a wicked act of war crime.”

The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) issued a statement calling the bombing “inhuman, criminal, and a terrorist act,” pledging a firm response to what it called “cowardly aggression.”

Media watchdog groups have also voiced outrage. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) condemned the bombing, with its West Asia representative, Sara Qudah, stating: “Israel’s impunity in killing nearly 200 journalists in Gaza has now emboldened it to target media institutions elsewhere in the region.”

Since October 2023, Israel has been widely accused of targeting media personnel, with over 250 Palestinian journalists reportedly killed in Gaza amid its military campaign.

This latest strike follows a wave of Israeli attacks on Iran that began Friday, reportedly resulting in the deaths of several senior Iranian military officials, nuclear scientists, and civilians, including women and children. In response, Iran launched a retaliatory operation, “True Promise III,” involving missile and drone strikes over the weekend.

As tensions between the two regional powers escalate, international observers are warning that continued targeting of media institutions represents not only a grave threat to press freedom but a dangerous violation of international law.

The full extent of casualties from the IRIB bombing remains unclear, though reports suggest multiple journalists were wounded. Iran has vowed to pursue justice through diplomatic and legal channels, while preparations for potential further military responses are reportedly underway.
