Government to Continue Legal Action, International Cooperation to Maximise 1MDB Asset Recovery

KUALA LUMPUR: The government will continue pursuing legal action and strengthening international cooperation to maximise the recovery of remaining misappropriated assets linked to 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB), according to the Ministry of Finance (MoF).

These efforts are crucial to reducing the country’s financial burden and ensuring that the interests of the people remain protected.

As of Aug 31, 2026, the government had paid RM42.5 billion to meet 1MDB-related commitments, including principal repayments, interest payments, legal fees and operational costs.

The MoF stated this in a written reply to a question from Azli Yusof (PH-Shah Alam) regarding improvement measures following the Auditor-General’s Report on public fund leakages, the latest status of national asset recovery related to major financial scandals, and the management of recovered funds.

Regarding the status of asset recovery and mechanisms for managing funds linked to financial scandals, the ministry said the largest ongoing asset recovery efforts currently involve 1MDB.

“To date, the government has successfully recovered RM31.3 billion in assets and funds related to 1MDB,” it said.
