Government Moves Swiftly to Address Overcrowded Schools in Selangor: YB Fadhlina Sidek

KUALA LUMPUR: Education Minister YB Fadhlina Sidek has directed swift and decisive action to resolve the long-standing issue of overcrowded schools in Selangor, stressing that government efforts must deliver tangible outcomes rather than mere administrative activity.

She said overcrowding, congested classrooms, and inadequate school facilities continue to undermine effective teaching and learning and warned officials against delaying action until issues gain public attention online.

“We must not wait for problems to go viral before taking responsibility. Addressing overcrowded schools is our duty, and it directly affects the quality of education received by our children,” she said.

To ensure immediate intervention, the Ministry of Education convened an urgent meeting with the Director of the Selangor State Education Department (JPN) and senior officials to finalize short-term and long-term solutions.
According to the ministry, 18 overcrowded schools have been officially identified in Selangor, with one additional school newly listed. Following an assessment of urgent needs, approval has been granted for the immediate construction of additional classrooms at all affected schools. The minister has also authorized the increase in teacher postings to address shortages caused by high student enrollment.

The additional classrooms will be constructed in phases but under an accelerated schedule, while ongoing school construction projects across the state will be given priority to ensure timely completion.

Fadhlina added that the Malaysia Education Blueprint 2026–2035 places strong emphasis on creating a conducive learning environment supported by adequate infrastructure as part of national efforts to raise education standards.

She reiterated that public service must be driven by accountability and commitment, not social media pressure.

Following the Selangor engagement, the ministry will next meet with the Kedah State Education Department to address similar overcrowding challenges in schools across Kedah.
