KUALA LUMPUR: The government is in the process of evaluating telecom companies that will develop the country’s second 5G network.

According to TV3, Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo stated that the tender process for the second 5G network closed on July 31, and a decision will be made soon.

“The decision will be made as quickly as possible. It will be announced by (Communications Minister) Fahmi Fadzil as it falls under the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC),” he said to the media after witnessing the signing of two memorandums of understanding (MoUs) between Axiata Group Bhd, CyberSecurity Malaysia, and the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) to collaborate on cybersecurity today.

It was reported that three telecom companies, CelcomDigi Bhd, Maxis Bhd, and U Mobile Sdn Bhd, have expressed interest in leading the development of the second 5G network.

On July 31, CelcomDigi submitted a proposal to the SKMM to implement the second 5G network.

CelcomDigi’s Chief Executive Officer, Datuk Idham Nawawi, stated in a statement that the company is confident it has made a strong case for implementing Malaysia’s second 5G network.

This could be done either independently or in collaboration with other parties, to ensure the development of a thriving 5G ecosystem for the country.
