KUALA LUMPUR: The Foreign Ministry and the Malaysian High Commission are considering all available options, including evacuation if necessary, to ensure the safety of Malaysians in Bangladesh amid the challenging situation in the country.

According to Sinar Harian, currently, Malaysian students affected by the situation have been relocated to the High Commission’s premises for their safety.

“The Foreign Ministry wishes to emphasize that the safety of Malaysians abroad is our priority. On this basis, affected Malaysian students have been relocated to the High Commission’s premises for their protection.

“The Ministry understands the concerns of Malaysians about the safety of their family members in Bangladesh. In addition to carefully assessing the situation’s developments, the Ministry is working with the Ministry of Higher Education and other relevant agencies to assist Malaysian students in Bangladesh,” it said in a statement on Sunday.

At the same time, the Foreign Ministry advises Malaysians to be cautious of individuals promising assistance to Malaysians in Bangladesh.

All Malaysian students are also urged to stay in touch and cooperate with the Malaysian High Commission and check in by contacting the operations room.

“The Foreign Ministry urges all Malaysians in Bangladesh to avoid protest areas, remain vigilant, and adhere to instructions from local authorities in line with the curfew currently in effect.

“The Ministry is closely monitoring the situation and will provide updates as necessary,” it said.

Previously, media reported that thousands of Bangladeshi students have been protesting since July after the court reinstated job quotas in the government sector that had been abolished in 2018.

In response, the country has announced the closure of all public and private universities as the protests have intensified this week.

More than 100 people have been killed in the protests since violence erupted on Tuesday.
