KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s flood situation worsened on Monday (Nov 24) night, with more than 17,000 people forced to evacuate as rising river levels and continuous rain affected multiple states, particularly Kelantan, Perak, Selangor, Kedah, and Perlis.

Kelantan remains the hardest hit, recording 9,882 evacuees from 3,608 families across 40 relief centers in Kota Baru, Tumpat, Bachok, and Pasir Puteh. The number had increased from 9,634 earlier in the afternoon.
The Sungai Golok continues to pose a major threat, with water levels surpassing alert thresholds at two points: 7.68 m in Bachok and 7.81 m in Rantau Panjang, both above the danger mark.

In Perlis, the flood situation escalated sharply, rising from 1,497 evacuees to 2,017 people (594 families) by nightfall. Those evacuated were mainly residents from Kangar, Arau, and Padang Besar, who are now seeking shelter at nine active relief centers.

Selangor saw a significant spike, with numbers jumping to 1,732 evacuees (474 families) as of 8.30pm, compared to just 327 earlier.
Relief centers increased from eight to 15 locations, including SRA Dusun Nanding, Kompleks Penghulu Batu 10, Balai Raya Kampung Melaka, and Batu 9 in Hulu Langat, along with SK Shah Alam and SK Desa Aman in Kuala Selangor.
Eight rivers in the state have exceeded danger levels, notably Sungai Langat and Sungai Bernam, heightening concerns of further overflow.

In Perak, flood victims rose to 1,786 evacuees (554 families) across 20 centers, up from 1,415 earlier in the day.
Manjung recorded the highest count with 996 evacuees, followed by Perak Tengah (643), Larut, Matang, and Selama (38), and Hilir Perak (109).

Kedah reported 1,088 evacuees (344 families) from Kulim and Kubang Pasu sheltered at nine relief centers.
Four rivers exceeded danger levels, including Sungai Laka, Sungai Sintok, Sungai Titi Kerbau, and Sungai Sari, while three more rivers were placed on warning alerts.

Meanwhile, in Terengganu, flood conditions improved, with evacuees dropping from 205 to 129 people by 8pm, all housed at SK Kuala Besut in Besut.

Penang recorded a slight decrease from 404 evacuees to 385 people (103 families) across four centers.
SK Lahar Yooi in North Seberang Perai recorded the highest number with 172 evacuees, followed by Desa Puri (107), SK Pengkalan Jaya (56), and SK Permatang Pasir (50).

Authorities across the affected states are urging residents to remain alert, follow evacuation instructions promptly, and monitor official updates as adverse weather patterns continue to threaten low-lying and riverbank areas.
