Fire Breaks Out at Kuching Tahfiz Centre, 24 Escape Unhurt

KUCHING, July 20: A fire broke out at the Mahaad Tahfiz Husnul Khotimah in Semerah Padi, Kuching, on Sunday evening, prompting a swift emergency response and the successful evacuation of all occupants. Twenty students and four ustaz managed to escape the blaze unharmed, according to the Sarawak Operations Movement Centre.

The distress call was received at 5:47 PM, prompting the dispatch of firefighting teams from Petra Jaya and Padungan fire stations. Firefighters arrived promptly and managed to bring the situation under control within an hour.

The blaze was confined to the roof section of the tahfiz center, while the ground floor remained untouched, minimizing structural damage.

“All 24 occupants—20students and four ustaz—were safely evacuated without any injuries,” said the Fire and Rescue Department in an official statement.

The operation was fully concluded by 6:48 PM. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire and to assess the extent of the damage and financial loss.

Residents of the area have praised the quick response of the fire services, which helped prevent a potential tragedy.

No temporary relocation has been announced yet for the affected students, and officials are working closely with the tahfiz management to ensure the safety and continuity of learning for the students.
