KUALA LUMPUR : Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called for due process to be respected in the ongoing scrutiny surrounding Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki, urging the public to allow him to explain his shareholding transactions.

Speaking after attending the Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia’s (ACCCIM) Lunar New Year reception on Wednesday night, Anwar defended Azam, saying the MACC chief should not be judged prematurely.

“He is doing his job. Why attack him? We must listen to the explanations from all sides. We have to hear his explanation,” Anwar said.

Azam has been facing renewed public attention over allegations related to his ownership of shares in several companies. He previously stated that the shares were held through nominee arrangements and has denied any wrongdoing, calling for transparency and clarification to address public concerns.

Earlier in his speech at the event, Anwar emphasized that Malaysia must continue to be governed by the rule of law, rather than emotional reactions or unilateral actions that could undermine national stability and unity. He warned that decisions driven by pressure or sentiment could weaken institutional integrity and social harmony.

The Prime Minister also highlighted the importance of mutual respect in Malaysia’s multi-ethnic and multi-religious society, cautioning against any form of disrespect toward religious beliefs and cultural practices. He noted that Malaysia’s long-standing tradition of coexistence must be preserved, including respect for sensitive issues such as food practices among different communities.

Meanwhile, ACCCIM president Datuk Ng Yih Pyng called for the creation of a National SME Transformation Platform to better coordinate and strengthen government support programs for small and medium enterprises (SMEs). He said SMEs are facing rising costs, global competition, financing challenges, and manpower shortages and require structured long-term support to remain competitive.

Ng welcomed recent government initiatives, including improvements in tax refund processes, reduced service tax on rental and leasing services, plans for direct hiring of foreign workers, and new financing schemes for festive and MSME sectors. However, he urged the government to ensure these measures are easily accessible and effectively delivered to businesses that need them most.

The event was attended by around 700 guests, including cabinet ministers, senior government officials, foreign diplomats, and business leaders.
