Education Minister Fadhlina Orders Immediate Action on School Sexual Harassment Complaints

GEORGE TOWN: Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek has directed school administrators, district education offices, and state education departments to respond promptly to allegations of sexual misconduct in schools and ensure such cases are reported without delay.

Speaking after presenting an approval letter for the construction of a new building for SJKC Heng Ee in George Town on Saturday, Fadhlina stressed that authorities must not wait for incidents to gain public attention on social media before taking action.

“We want all district education offices to remain vigilant and respond immediately to any reports of sexual misconduct. Action should not depend on whether a case goes viral,” she said.

The minister rejected allegations that authorities only acted after claims of a teacher sexually harassing a student in Lawas, Sarawak, gained traction online. Instead, she emphasised that reports should be lodged directly with the relevant authorities to enable swift intervention.

“Reporting to the authorities is the proper course of action. Immediate action is crucial because the safety and protection of children must always come first,” she added.

Addressing a separate case involving allegations that a Year Six student in Perlis suffered serious injuries due to bullying, Fadhlina confirmed that investigations are currently underway.

She said the matter had been referred to the relevant authorities, while the Education Ministry is also conducting its own internal probe.

“We do not compromise when it comes to student safety and welfare. Every complaint is taken seriously and investigated thoroughly,” she said.

Fadhlina also highlighted the importance of safeguarding teachers, particularly discipline teachers, while they carry out their responsibilities in schools.

“Our educators have the right to legal protection while performing their duties. Established reporting and investigation mechanisms within the ministry and through law enforcement agencies ensure that all incidents are handled appropriately,” she said.

The minister further noted that the ministry has recently introduced the Safe School Management Guidelines and Student Protection Policy, aimed at strengthening child protection measures across the country’s education system.

According to Fadhlina, the new framework clearly defines the responsibilities of schools, teachers, parents, and other stakeholders in ensuring students learn in a safe and secure environment.

“These guidelines provide clear accountability and assurances for everyone involved in the care and protection of children, and they will be implemented in schools nationwide,” she said.

The initiative reflects the ministry’s commitment to creating safer learning environments while ensuring swift responses to cases involving student welfare, bullying, and sexual misconduct.
