RIYADH, Sept 11 (VoM): Estonia’s Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna has strongly condemned Israel’s recent airstrike on Doha, describing it as a blatant violation of Qatar’s sovereignty and a dangerous precedent for international law.
Speaking to Arab News during his official visit to Saudi Arabia this week, Tsahkna said Tallinn views the incident with utmost seriousness.
“The Israeli attack against Qatar, we have loudly condemned. For Estonia, sovereignty is a matter of principle, and this strike represents a grave violation,” he stressed, following talks with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan.
The Israeli strike, which took place even as Gaza ceasefire talks were ongoing, targeted Hamas leaders but also claimed six lives, including a Qatari security officer. Qatar denounced the attack as a breach of international law, drawing widespread criticism from the global community.
On the wider Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Tsahkna reiterated Estonia’s consistent stance in favor of a negotiated two-state solution.
“Estonia has always supported the two-state solution, which remains the only viable way out of this conflict. Unfortunately, we are not seeing progress or goodwill. The attack against Qatar further complicates the peace process, as Doha, Riyadh, and other regional actors are crucial for facilitating negotiations,” he said.
The Estonian foreign minister confirmed that his country will join the declaration on the two-state solution at the upcoming UN General Assembly in New York. He also expressed optimism about the Saudi-French summit on the Palestinian issue scheduled to take place on the sidelines of the UN meetings.
His remarks come as European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced plans to pursue sanctions and a partial suspension of trade with Israel over its ongoing military operations in Gaza.
